Me; from Global to Personal

My thoughts of 5 objects were deepened by reading the article, "Interior Decoration— Offline and Online." by Daniel Miller. One of the idea in the essay was that just by arranging your personal belonging, the arrangement itself can show who you are and hold a main subject that pierces through those paraphernalia. My 5 objects, even though I didn't picked those while thinking about a main theme, could be organized as one big circle of Venn Diagram.

It will start from my country, Korea. Bul-dak-bok-keum-myeon, aka. Spicy Chicken Noodle, became a global trend as ASMR and Mukbang got popular in YouTube. While reminding the relation between online and offline, one of the main subjects in above-mentioned article, I already liked spicy foods before it became a syndrome. Not as eccentric as how those Muckbangers eat, but still, I liked my food to have the spice.

Then it connects to my father's Galaxy which is very old. Samsung, being one of the largest Korean industry and brand of electronic device, I've only used Samsung phones through my whole life of 24 years. It can also connect to my family, where I also belong, but in a smaller scale. The phone was used by my father and it is inherited to me. Considering people tend to change their phone in at least two years, a seven-year-old phone that still works is a rare item. My father managed this device just for me to use my Korean SIM card when I need it and not changing it with my UK SIM card every time of it's usage.

On the other side, Ssack Stick, which is referred as cleaner stick, came from my mom. She always cares and worries for me, even more than I worry myself. I've used to think it as a big burden until I was a teenager and thought of it as restriction. However, now that I live by myself in London, I became to understand her words as love and affection. So even this kind of small and common object now holds a special place in my heart.

Next object is my camera, which I got from my parents as birthday present after finishing my Foundation course. They knew I liked taking pictures through my phone. Phone camera these days are quite good, but taking photo with a device which sole purpose is to photograph was a different thing. Gifted by my parents, the camera itself became my experience. My memory.

That's why, followed by camera, my gallery folder would be my fifth object. Even though it takes it's form in digital, it lies in my phone which I carry all the time. In my gallery there's photos of my family, my dog Aji, illustrations of comic that I started to like, screenshots of the games I play. Hence if camera's the experience, the gallery folder would be a memoir. Each files of photo, tied in group which is called folder, could also be a representative of myself and my life.

Bul-dak-bok-keum-myeon (aka. Spicy Chicken Noodle/Ramyeon)

I like food with spiciness more than those without. If there's an option I'll mostly prefer adding those spices such as chili powder, paste or anything. Typical Korean characteristic. And this spicy noodle somehow got popular in internet especially between YouTube ASMR or Muckbang community. I for myself, quite like to have this Ramyeon once in a while. It can be a good kick; and also a bit of tear jerking experience.

My father's old phone (SS Galaxy Note 4, 2014)

Since I'm a Korean and I have my korean phone number, sometimes I have to get myself authorized through that number. And believe me, changing SIM cards can be pretty annoying just by turning your phone on and off several times. Therefore my dad gave me his old phone, which is SEVEN years old, to use it with my Korean SIM card while I'm in UK. Now the reason why this thing still works is because my dad studied electric engineering when he was a student. He used to disassemble all the computer parts or electric wires and reassemble just for a hobby. He still fixes most of our house electronics and I'm quite proud of him.

Ssack Stick (Cleaner Stick)

My mom is kind of a person who's always on the ball. In contrast, I've been quite a slow and clumsy one. One day my mom handed me with this... stick and said when you get your clothes messy and you need to clean it without doing the whole laundry, put this on and wipe the stain with wet tissue. I can tell by experience, this thing actually works. I've been thinking that my mom worries about me too much, but I came to know that as much as she worries, she cares about me.
